In the United States, risk often rises in spring. Activity reaches a major peak from late spring through summer and increases again in fall in regions where adult ticks remain active.

Repellents and Protective Clothing
Use an EPA-registered repellent containing DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus, also called OLE, according to the label. Do not apply OLE products to children younger than three years.
Wear light-colored protective clothing, tuck pants into socks, and choose long sleeves when walking through brush or tall grass. Permethrin-treated clothing and gear provide another layer of protection, but apply permethrin only as directed and not directly to skin.
Tick Checks After Outdoor Time
Check your clothing and gear before coming inside. Inspect your body carefully, paying attention to the scalp, hairline, ears, neck, waist, groin, armpits, and behind the knees.
Shower soon after outdoor exposure to help remove unattached ticks. Put worn clothing in a hot dryer when appropriate, and check children and pets because ticks may attach to them before you notice one on yourself.

If you find an attached tick, use fine-tipped tweezers to remove it promptly. Grasp it close to the skin and pull upward with steady pressure.
Clean the bite area and your hands. Avoid twisting, crushing, burning, or covering the tick with petroleum jelly.
Watch for an expanding rash, fever, chills, headache, fatigue, muscle aches, joint pain, or other unusual symptoms after tick bites. Contact a healthcare professional if symptoms develop, and mention when and where the exposure occurred.
