Alpha-gal syndrome (AGS) is a food allergy that can develop after a tick bite. It may cause reactions to mammalian meat and other products containing alpha-gal, a molecule found in most mammals but not in people.

In the United States, the lone star tick most strongly causes alpha-gal sensitization. Other ticks may also play a role.
Symptoms can appear hours after eating beef, pork, or other mammalian products, making the connection easy to miss. Knowing which ticks carry risk, where exposure occurs, and what to do after a bite can help you respond sooner.
Tick Species Linked to Alpha-Gal Sensitization
Researchers continue to study how tick saliva and alpha-gal-containing antigens affect the immune system. In the United States, evidence points most strongly to the lone star tick.
Blacklegged ticks and several species outside the country remain under investigation.

The Lone Star Tick in the United States
The lone star tick, scientifically called Amblyomma americanum, most commonly causes AGS in the United States. It lives widely across the South, East, and Central states, including wooded areas, brush, tall grass, and places with abundant deer.
A bite does not guarantee that you will develop AGS. The CDC’s explanation of alpha-gal syndrome notes that individual immune responses differ.
Researchers still investigate why some people develop alpha-gal IgE antibodies while others do not.
Other U.S. Ticks Under Study
Blacklegged ticks, including Ixodes scapularis, and western blacklegged ticks have been reported in connection with AGS less often than lone star ticks. Researchers have not yet determined the exact contribution of each species.
You should treat any tick bite as a reason to watch your health. Tick anaphylaxis is a separate allergy involving reactions to tick bites themselves.
It should not be confused with AGS, which involves sensitization to alpha-gal. Researchers also study whether tick exposure and parasitic infections, including Ascaris lumbricoides, can influence alpha-gal immune responses.
Species Reported Outside the United States
AGS has been reported in countries where different ticks are common. Ixodes holocyclus has been investigated in Australia.
Haemaphysalis longicornis has drawn attention because of its expanding presence in parts of the United States and its ability to carry mammalian compounds. Reports from other regions do not prove that every species causes AGS.
The available evidence varies by location, testing methods, and exposure history. Species-specific risk continues to develop through research.
Why a Tick Bite Can Lead to a Meat Allergy
A tick bite can expose your immune system to alpha-gal through tick saliva. If your body produces alpha-gal IgE antibodies, later exposure to mammalian products may trigger symptoms ranging from hives to life-threatening anaphylaxis.

The Alpha-Gal Molecule and Immune Response
Alpha-gal is a sugar molecule found in most mammals, including cows, pigs, sheep, deer, and rabbits. Humans do not naturally produce it.
A tick bite may introduce alpha-gal-containing material that prompts your immune system to make specific IgE antibodies. After sensitization, alpha-gal IgE can recognize the molecule in mammalian meat and other products.
Beef, pork, lamb, venison, and rabbit are common triggers. Some people also react to gelatin, dairy products, milk, medications, or medical products made with mammalian ingredients.
Delayed Symptoms After Mammalian Products
AGS symptoms often appear several hours after you eat mammalian meat, rather than immediately. That delay can make it difficult to connect a meal with an allergic reaction.
Possible symptoms include hives, rash, itching, swelling, stomach pain, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, wheezing, shortness of breath, or difficulty breathing. Severe reactions require emergency care.
If you have prescribed epinephrine and signs of anaphylaxis, use it as directed and call 911.
Who May Face Greater Exposure
Your risk rises with repeated tick exposure, especially if you spend time in wooded or brushy areas. Hunters, hikers, outdoor workers, gardeners, and people living near large deer populations may encounter ticks more often.
You can develop AGS at any age. A history of multiple tick bites may increase concern, though it cannot predict whether you will become allergic.
Where Risk Is Reported and What to Do Next
CDC tick surveillance shows that reported AGS occurs most often in the South, East, and Central United States, where lone star ticks are established. Tick ranges are changing, so exposure is possible in places not traditionally associated with the condition.

U.S. Regions and Changing Tick Ranges
Cases have been reported from states such as North Carolina, Arkansas, Missouri, Virginia, Rhode Island, Maine, Washington, and New Jersey. Long Island has also received attention because lone star ticks occur there.
These reports do not mean every resident faces the same risk. County-level tick activity can vary widely.
Tick surveillance is also improving. The CDC reported more than 110,000 suspected cases from 2010 through 2022.
The true number may be higher because AGS is not nationally notifiable.
Diagnosis and Everyday Management
See an allergist or allergy specialist if you develop delayed reactions after mammalian meat or notice symptoms following a tick bite. Diagnosis usually combines your exposure and symptom history with a blood test for alpha-gal antibodies.
Your clinician may also recommend additional allergy testing. Management often involves avoiding foods and products that trigger you.
Poultry and fish do not contain alpha-gal. Packaged foods and medications can contain hidden mammalian ingredients.
Your clinician can explain whether you need to avoid dairy, gelatin, cetuximab, vaccines, or other products. The CDC’s management guidance emphasizes avoidance, emergency planning, and prevention of future bites.
No vaccine currently prevents AGS.
Preventing Future Tick Bites
Use EPA-registered repellents. Wear long sleeves and light-colored clothing.
Treat clothing with permethrin according to label directions. Stay on cleared trails and avoid brushing against vegetation.
Check your body, clothing, gear, children, and pets after outdoor activities.
Remove an attached tick promptly with fine-tipped tweezers. Grip it close to your skin and pull upward steadily.
Clean the bite area and your hands. Watch for symptoms and tell your healthcare professional about the tick exposure if a delayed allergic reaction occurs.
