American dog ticks often become less noticeable after repeated freezing weather. Lone star ticks may remain active later in the year across much of the South and Mid-Atlantic.

Gulf Coast ticks favor warmer regions and may persist through mild winters.

Western and Rocky Mountain Tick Patterns

The western black-legged tick is associated with mild, moist habitats in parts of California, Oregon, and Washington, where activity can extend through much of the year. Seasonal peaks still vary with rainfall, temperature, and local habitat.

The Rocky Mountain wood tick generally follows snowmelt and warming conditions in mountain and northern areas. Its activity window is often shorter, but outdoor exposure can still lead to tick-borne diseases during peak weeks.

Stay Protected Until Local Conditions Change

A declining tick season does not mean zero risk. Continue practical protection until your area has experienced sustained cold, frozen ground, or conditions that consistently limit tick activity.

Tick Checks After Time in Tall Grass and Wooded Areas

After walking through tall grass, brush, or wooded areas, inspect your clothing and skin. Check your scalp, hairline, behind your ears, armpits, waistband, groin, and behind your knees.

Shower soon after coming indoors and place trail clothing in a hot dryer to reduce the chance that an unattached tick remains with you. Check children and pets carefully, since they often move close to vegetation.

Protective Clothing and Yard Tick Control

Wear long pants, light-colored clothing, and socks that cover your lower legs. An EPA-registered repellent can protect exposed skin, and properly treated clothing can add another barrier.

For yard tick control, mow grass, trim vegetation near paths, remove excess leaf litter, and create a clear mulch or gravel boundary between lawns and wooded edges. These steps reduce favorable habitat but do not guarantee a tick-free yard.

Removing a Tick and Protecting Dogs

If a tick bites you or stays attached, use fine-tipped tweezers to grasp it close to your skin. Pull upward steadily without twisting.

Clean the bite area and your hands. Seek medical advice if you develop a rash, fever, fatigue, or other symptoms.
