Ticks thrive in humid, sheltered vegetation and rely on animals to carry them from place to place. They are arachnids, not insects.

A tick bites you when it climbs onto you, attaches to your skin, and feeds on blood.

What Is the Cause of Ticks? Habitat and Life Cycle

Suitable tick habitat, combined with nearby wildlife, pets, and people, creates opportunities for ticks to feed in your yard or neighborhood. By learning where ticks live and how they develop, you can reduce tick bites and recognize when a bite may need medical attention.

Why Ticks Are Present in an Area

Ticks belong to the group Acari and are small arachnids. As parasites, they feed on the blood of hosts such as mammals and birds to complete their life cycle.

Their numbers increase where moisture, shelter, and host movement provide dependable conditions for feeding.

Humidity, Leaf Litter, and Shelter

Ticks lose moisture easily, so many species seek out shaded, humid places. Leaf litter, fallen branches, tall grass, dense shrubs, and woodland edges protect them from drying out and provide surfaces for climbing.

A lawn beside unmanaged brush can serve as a transition zone between your home and tick habitat. Irrigation, shade, and piles of leaves help maintain the damp microclimate that supports tick populations.

Blood-Feeding Hosts and Animal Movement

Ticks depend on hosts throughout their development. Mice, deer, rabbits, raccoons, birds, dogs, and other wildlife can carry ticks into yards, parks, and neighborhoods.

Animals moving through a fence line or wooded corridor can transport ticks. Deer and rodents may also provide the blood meals ticks need to mature and reproduce.

How Questing Ticks Reach People and Pets

Ticks cannot fly or jump. Instead, they climb grass or shrubs and wait in a behavior called questing.

They detect breath, body odors, heat, moisture, vibrations, and movement. When you or your pet brushes against vegetation, a tick grabs on with its legs.

It may crawl for some time before choosing a feeding site. Tick saliva can contain anesthetic compounds, so an attached tick is easy to miss.

Life Cycle and Tick Types

Most hard ticks pass through four stages: egg, larva, nymph, and adult. Each active stage usually needs a blood meal before molting or reproducing.

The timing of these stages depends on tick species, climate, and host availability.

From Egg to Larva, Nymph, and Adult

An egg hatches into a six-legged larva. After feeding, the larva molts into an eight-legged nymph.

A nymph feeds again and develops into an adult tick. The adult takes another blood meal before reproduction.

Tick nymphs often pose a major bite risk because they are tiny and difficult to spot. In the United States, many human Lyme disease infections involve infected blacklegged tick nymphs during warmer months.

The CDC describes the four-stage tick life cycle. Some species use one, two, or three hosts during development.

Hard Ticks and Soft Ticks

Hard ticks belong to the order Ixodida and family Ixodidae. They have a visible scutum, or hardened shield, and often remain attached for hours or days while feeding.

Soft ticks belong to the family Argasidae. They lack the prominent scutum of hard ticks and commonly feed more briefly, sometimes in nests, burrows, or sheltered structures.

Both groups can affect people and animals.

Common Species Linked to Human Bites

The deer tick, also called the blacklegged tick, includes Ixodes species such as Ixodes ricinus in Europe and related blacklegged ticks in the United States. Deer ticks can transmit Lyme disease and other pathogens when infected.

The American dog tick can transmit certain bacterial infections, including Rocky Mountain spotted fever. The brown dog tick, Rhipicephalus sanguineus, is closely associated with dogs and human dwellings and can survive in indoor environments.

Why Some Tick Bites Lead to Illness

A tick bite does not automatically cause disease. Illness depends on whether the tick carries a pathogen, whether transmission occurs during feeding, the tick species and life stage, and your health and location.

How Pathogens Move During Feeding

When a tick feeds on an infected animal, it may acquire bacteria, viruses, or parasites. During a later meal, pathogens can pass through tick saliva into the new host.

An attached tick may first cut the skin, insert its feeding tube, and release saliva that helps it remain attached and feed without being noticed.

Common Tick-Borne Diseases and Their Causes

In the United States, tick-borne disease includes infections caused by several kinds of pathogens.

  • Lyme disease, or Lyme borreliosis: Usually caused by Borrelia burgdorferi and transmitted by infected blacklegged ticks.
  • Rocky Mountain spotted fever, or RMSF: Caused by Rickettsia rickettsii and spread by certain infected ticks.
  • Ehrlichiosis and anaplasmosis: Bacterial diseases associated with different tick species and geographic regions.
  • Babesiosis: Caused by Babesia parasites, which can infect red blood cells.
  • Tularemia: A bacterial infection that can spread through tick bites and other routes.
  • Tick-borne relapsing fever and Colorado tick fever: Diseases caused by different bacteria or viruses.
  • Heartland virus and Powassan virus: Less common viral infections that can be serious.
  • STARI: Southern tick-associated rash illness, linked with some lone star tick bites.
  • Alpha-gal syndrome: An immune reaction to alpha-gal that can cause allergy to red meat after certain tick bites.

Tick saliva can also cause tick paralysis, a rare condition associated with a toxin rather than an infectious disease.

Symptoms That Need Medical Advice

Contact a healthcare professional if you develop symptoms within several weeks of a tick bite or outdoor exposure. Common signs include fever, chills, headache, fatigue, body aches, muscle aches, muscle pain, joint pain, nausea, or a rash.

A spreading bull’s-eye rash, known as erythema migrans, can occur with Lyme disease, though not every person develops it. Seek urgent care for breathing difficulty, severe weakness, confusion, rapidly worsening illness, or weakness that moves upward through the body.

Reducing Tick Exposure and Responding to a Bite

You can lower your risk by avoiding dense vegetation, creating barriers between your skin and plants, and checking promptly after outdoor activities.

Quick tick removal also reduces the time an attached tick has to feed.

Personal Protection in Tick Habitat

When you enter tick habitat, stay near the center of maintained trails and avoid brushing against tall grass, shrubs, and leaf litter. Wear long sleeves, long pants, and light-colored clothing so you can spot crawling ticks.

Use an EPA-registered tick repellent containing DEET on exposed skin according to the label. Clothing and gear treated with permethrin can provide additional protection, but you should follow product directions carefully and never apply permethrin directly to your skin.

Checking People, Pets, and Gear

Check your clothing and skin after time outdoors, especially around the ankles, waist, groin, armpits, scalp, ears, and behind the knees. Showering soon after returning indoors can help remove unattached ticks.

Examine pets carefully, including between toes, around the ears, under collars, and near the tail. Check backpacks, shoes, coats, and outdoor equipment before bringing them inside, since ticks can travel on fabric and gear.

Safe Tick Removal and Follow-Up

Use fine-tipped tweezers to remove the tick. Grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible.

Pull upward with steady pressure. Avoid twisting or crushing the tick.

Clean the bite area and your hands with soap and water or an alcohol-based product. Do not use petroleum jelly, heat, nail polish, or other substances to force the tick out.

Record the date and location of the bite. Watch for symptoms.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends prompt, careful tick removal. Seek medical advice if illness develops.
