Ticks are tiny arachnids and blood-feeding parasites that attach to people and animals for a meal. They do not jump or fly.

Instead, ticks wait in vegetation, detect a passing host, crawl onto the skin, and remain attached while feeding.

How Ticks Find Hosts And Feed

Ticks use heat, moisture, odor, carbon dioxide, and movement to locate mammals, birds, reptiles, and other hosts. Most hard ticks wait in suitable vegetation, while soft ticks often stay in nests or burrows and feed when a host is resting.

Questing In Grassy Areas And Leaf Litter

During questing, a tick climbs grass, shrubs, or low plants and holds its front legs outward. When you brush past, it grabs your clothing or skin.

Leaf litter, brush, wooded edges, and tall grassy areas create common tick habitats, especially in humid or shaded locations.

Ticks do not drop from trees. After reaching you, they may crawl for hours before choosing a feeding site.

How Tick Saliva And The Hypostome Aid Attachment

Saliva also helps the tick take repeated blood meals without being dislodged. Hard ticks in the order Ixodida, including the family Ixodidae, generally feed for several days.

Why Ticks Become Engorged

As feeding continues, a tick’s body expands with blood. A small adult tick can become an engorged tick many times larger than its unfed size.

Female adult ticks require a substantial blood meal to produce eggs. The scutum, or hardened shield, limits expansion in many hard ticks.

Males and females may feed differently. Adult ticks can remain attached until they have obtained enough blood before dropping into the environment.

What Happens During The Tick Life Cycle

The tick life cycle usually includes four stages: egg, larva, nymph, and adult. Each active stage needs a host and a blood meal before the tick can molt or reproduce.

From Egg To Larva, Nymph, And Adult

A female tick lays eggs, which hatch into six-legged larvae. After feeding, a larva molts into an eight-legged nymph.

The nymph feeds again, then develops into an adult that seeks another host. Nymphs are especially important for human health because they are very small and can be hard to spot.

Their activity often increases during warmer months, depending on the tick species and local climate. Unlike ticks, mites are related arachnids with a different body structure and life pattern.

Why Tick Populations Depend On Hosts

Tick populations rely on many hosts, including mice, birds, deer, pets, and people. A blacklegged tick may feed on a small mammal as a larva, a person as a nymph, and a larger animal as an adult.

If a host is unavailable, a tick may survive for months or longer while waiting. Weather, vegetation, wildlife abundance, and access to blood meals all influence local tick populations.

That is why tick numbers can vary sharply between nearby habitats.

How Tick Bites Can Affect Health

A tick bite may cause a local skin reaction, or it may expose you to pathogens. Ticks can carry bacteria, viruses, and parasites, including Borrelia burgdorferi, Rickettsia, Anaplasma, Ehrlichia, Babesia, and other organisms.

Common Bite Reactions And Allergy Symptoms

A bite can cause itching, burning, redness, swelling, or a small bump. These reactions often improve over several days, though saliva can sometimes trigger a larger irritated area.

Some lone star tick bites may contribute to alpha-gal syndrome, an allergy to a sugar found in many mammalian products. Seek emergency help for shortness of breath, facial or throat swelling, dizziness, or anaphylaxis.

Tick paralysis is uncommon but can cause increasing weakness or difficulty walking. Symptoms should improve after prompt removal. Medical evaluation is important.

Tick-Borne Infections And Their Warning Signs

Tick-borne diseases include Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, ehrlichiosis, anaplasmosis, babesiosis, tularemia, Colorado tick fever, Q fever, and relapsing fever.

Less common illnesses include Powassan virus disease, Heartland virus disease, and Southern tick-associated rash illness.

Watch for fever, chills, headache, fatigue, muscle aches, joint pain, swollen lymph nodes, nausea, or a spreading rash. Lyme disease may cause erythema migrans, sometimes described as a bull’s-eye rash, though its appearance varies.

When To Seek Medical Care

Contact a healthcare professional if you develop fever, rash, severe headache, worsening fatigue, unusual weakness, or joint pain within weeks of a tick bite. Tell the clinician when and where you were bitten, how long the tick was attached if known, and whether you saved it.

Seek urgent care for trouble breathing, confusion, fainting, severe weakness, or signs of anaphylaxis.

How To Prevent Bites And Remove Ticks Safely

Reducing exposure is the best defense against tickborne diseases. Use an EPA-registered tick repellent, wear protective clothing, avoid dense vegetation when possible, and check your skin, pets, clothing, and gear after outdoor activities.

Using Repellents And Permethrin

Apply an EPA-registered repellent containing DEET, picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus, para-menthane-diol, or 2-undecanone according to the label. Treat clothing and gear with permethrin products made for that purpose, and never apply permethrin directly to your skin.

Wear long pants, tuck pants into socks, and choose light-colored clothing to make ticks easier to see. Risk varies by species, including the blacklegged tick, lone star tick, American dog tick, brown dog tick, and Rocky Mountain wood tick.

An African tick may have different habitat and health implications, so local guidance matters.

Checking People, Pets, And Gear

Check your hairline, scalp, ears, neck, waist, groin, armpits, and behind your knees. Showering soon after coming indoors can help remove unattached ticks, while a hot dryer cycle can kill ticks on dry clothing.

Inspect dogs and cats carefully, especially around the ears, collar, toes, and between the legs. Ask your veterinarian about suitable tick prevention.

Check backpacks, shoes, outdoor equipment, and blankets before bringing them indoors.

Removing An Attached Tick With Tweezers

Use clean, fine-tipped tweezers to grasp the tick as close to your skin as possible. Pull upward slowly and steadily without twisting or crushing the tick.

If mouthparts remain, try to remove them with tweezers. Clean the bite and your hands with soap and water or alcohol.

Do not burn the tick, smother it with petroleum jelly, or apply chemicals. Place the tick in alcohol, a sealed container, or tape, and record the date and location of the bite.
