Ticks are blood-feeding parasites that can affect you or your pet in several ways. A tick bite may cause a small area of redness, itching, swelling, or irritation.

A tick infestation can lead to blood loss, skin damage, and stress in animals. Ticks also transmit bacteria, viruses, and parasites that cause disease.

Most tick bites are harmless, but you should remove any attached tick promptly and monitor for illness because symptoms can develop days or weeks after exposure. The effects depend on the tick species, how long it feeds, whether it carries a pathogen, and your health, age, or species.

A bite alone cannot tell you whether disease transmission occurred. Watch for an expanding rash, fever, unusual fatigue, headache, muscle or joint pain, weakness, or behavior changes in a pet, and seek medical or veterinary advice when these signs appear.

Immediate Effects at the Bite Site

Tick attachment can produce local skin changes even when no infection follows. During feeding, tick saliva helps reduce pain, inflammation, clotting, and immune detection, which can allow some ticks to remain attached for days.

Skin Irritation, Itching, and Local Rash

You may notice a red bump, mild swelling, tenderness, or itching around a tick bite. The mark often results from mechanical injury and your skin immunity responding to tick saliva.

A small, stable area of redness that fades over several days commonly reflects irritation rather than Lyme disease. A rash that expands, becomes painful, drains pus, or persists deserves medical attention.

Skin reactions can look different across people and may be harder to recognize on darker skin.

How Tick Attachment and Feeding Affect Skin

A tick pierces and anchors in skin using its chelicerae and other mouthparts. Some hard ticks, including members of the family Ixodidae, release substances that cement them in place and keep blood flowing during prolonged feeding.

Tick saliva also dampens local inflammation and immune signaling, which may reduce itching and help the tick feed unnoticed. Soft ticks in Argasidae often feed more briefly.

Members of Nuttalliellidae are rare and less familiar in routine clinical settings.

Allergic Reactions and Anaphylaxis

Some people develop a stronger allergic response, with widespread hives, facial swelling, wheezing, dizziness, or vomiting. Trouble breathing, throat swelling, faintness, or rapidly worsening symptoms require emergency care for possible anaphylaxis.

Do not apply chemicals, heat, petroleum jelly, or alcohol to an attached tick. These methods can irritate skin and may increase regurgitation or mouthpart retention.

Tick Paralysis and Other Toxin Effects

Certain ticks produce salivary neurotoxins during feeding. Tick paralysis can begin with fatigue, tingling, poor coordination, or weakness that progresses upward, and symptoms may improve after you remove the tick.

Progressive weakness, difficulty walking, swallowing problems, or breathing changes are emergencies. Remove the tick promptly with fine-tipped tweezers and seek urgent medical care, especially if symptoms continue.

Infections and Symptoms Hosts May Develop

Tick-borne pathogens can enter a host during feeding, though many bites do not cause infection. Symptoms vary from mild fever and fatigue to neurologic, blood, joint, or organ complications, depending on the disease and the host.

Lyme Disease and Lyme Borreliosis

In the United States, Borrelia burgdorferi causes Lyme disease, which blacklegged ticks transmit. Related bacteria, including Borrelia afzelii, cause Lyme borreliosis in other regions.

Early symptoms may include fever, chills, headache, fatigue, muscle aches, and an expanding erythema migrans rash. Later effects can include facial weakness, nerve symptoms, heart inflammation, or arthritis with joint pain.

Rickettsial and Bacterial Illnesses

Ehrlichia bacteria cause ehrlichiosis, and Anaplasma causes anaplasmosis. These illnesses may produce sudden fever, chills, headache, muscle aches, nausea, and profound fatigue.

Untreated illness can become severe, particularly in older adults or people with weakened immune systems. Rickettsia species cause Rocky Mountain spotted fever, which can lead to fever, headache, vomiting, and a rash that may appear later.

STARI, or Southern tick-associated rash illness, may follow a lone star tick bite and can resemble an early Lyme-like rash, though its cause remains uncertain.

Viral and Parasitic Tick-Borne Illnesses

Babesia parasites infect red blood cells and may cause fever, chills, sweating, fatigue, anemia, jaundice, or dark urine. Risk of severe babesiosis is higher after splenectomy and in some older or immunocompromised people.

Other illnesses include tick-borne encephalitis and Powassan virus, which can cause brain or spinal inflammation, seizures, confusion, or lasting neurologic problems. Heartland virus and Bourbon virus are rare U.S. infections that may cause fever, fatigue, gastrointestinal symptoms, low white blood cell counts, thrombocytopenia, or, in severe cases, hemorrhagic fever.

When Fever, Joint Pain, or Rash Needs Care

Contact a clinician after a tick bite if you develop fever, an expanding rash, severe headache, joint pain, facial weakness, unusual bruising, breathing difficulty, or marked fatigue. Tell them when and where exposure occurred, whether the tick was attached, and whether you saved a photo or specimen.

Seek emergency care for confusion, seizures, severe weakness, trouble breathing, fainting, or rapidly worsening illness.

Why Risk Varies Among Hosts, Ticks, and Places

Your risk depends on the tick species, local pathogen activity, habitat, host behavior, and duration of attachment. A veterinarian can help assess exposure in pets.

Tick Species and Geographic Distribution

In the northeastern and north-central United States, Ixodes scapularis, the blacklegged tick or deer tick, can transmit Lyme disease and other pathogens. In parts of Europe and Asia, Ixodes ricinus and Ixodes persulcatus fill similar vector roles.

The Amblyomma americanum lone star tick is widespread in the eastern and southeastern United States. Amblyomma maculatum, the Gulf Coast tick, and Dermacentor variabilis, the American dog tick, also affect people and animals.

Other relevant species include Dermacentor andersoni, Dermacentor reticulatus, Rhipicephalus sanguineus, and the invasive Haemaphysalis longicornis. Risk can differ sharply between Connecticut, New England, the Midwest, the Southeast, and the West because tick ranges and pathogen prevalence are not uniform.

Wildlife Hosts, Pets, and Human Exposure

Wildlife hosts such as mice, deer, birds, and other mammals help maintain tick populations and move ticks through neighborhoods. Pets can carry attached ticks indoors, exposing you even when you did not enter tall grass or woodland.

Dogs may also develop anemia, skin irritation, fever, lameness, or organ complications from tick-borne disease. Check your pet after outdoor activity and ask a veterinarian about prevention suited to species, weight, age, and lifestyle.

Attachment Duration and Vector Competence

Many hard ticks feed for several days, and the chance of pathogen transmission can depend on the organism, tick species, and time attached. Removing a tick promptly reduces feeding time, though it cannot guarantee that transmission did not occur.

Vector competence describes a tick’s biological ability to acquire, maintain, and transmit a particular pathogen. Tick-pathogen interactions, the tick microbiome, symbionts, host immunity, and genomics can all influence transmission.

Tick identification alone cannot predict your personal outcome.

Climate Change, Surveillance, and One Health

Climate change, land fragmentation, wildlife movement, and warmer conditions can alter tick activity and geographic range. These changes may increase exposure in places where people have had less experience with tick prevention.

A One Health approach connects human medicine, veterinary care, wildlife ecology, and environmental management. Researchers use disease surveillance and data reported by clinicians, laboratories, veterinarians, and the public to identify emerging risks.

Reducing Harm After Outdoor Exposure

Prompt action limits tick attachment and feeding and gives you a clear record for monitoring. After outdoor activity, check your skin, hair, clothing, gear, and pets, especially around the scalp, ears, waist, groin, armpits, and behind the knees.

Finding and Removing an Attached Tick Safely

Use fine-tipped tweezers to grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible. Pull upward with steady, even pressure, then clean the bite area and your hands with soap and water or an alcohol-based sanitizer.

Do not twist forcefully, crush the tick against your skin, or cover it with petroleum jelly or nail polish. If mouthparts remain, clean the area and ask a clinician whether further care is needed.

A photograph may help with identification, though routine tick testing does not reliably predict whether you will become ill.

Monitoring People and Pets After Removal

Write down the date, location, and likely duration of attachment. Watch for a spreading rash, fever, headache, fatigue, joint pain, swollen glands, unusual bruising, weakness, or behavior changes during the following weeks.

Contact a clinician if symptoms develop and mention the tick exposure, even if the tick was removed quickly. For pets, call a veterinarian about fever, reduced appetite, pale gums, vomiting, lameness, weakness, or breathing changes.

Preventing Future Exposure

Apply an EPA-registered tick repellent as directed. Wear long sleeves and light-colored clothing.

Tuck pants into socks when in areas with ticks. Treat clothing and gear with products containing permethrin only according to the label.

Keep these products away from cats unless the label specifically permits use. Walk on cleared trails and avoid brushing against dense vegetation.

Perform a full-body check after returning indoors. Shower soon after outdoor exposure to help remove unattached ticks.

Maintain your yard regularly. Remove leaf litter promptly to reduce tick habitat.

Report unusual clusters of illness or heavy tick activity to support local disease surveillance.
