Lyme disease comes from infected blacklegged ticks, not from every tick you encounter. The chance that a tick carries Lyme disease can range from nearly zero to more than 50%, depending mainly on the tick species, your location, and the tick’s life stage.

A bite from an infected tick does not automatically lead to illness. The tick usually needs to remain attached for more than 24 hours to transmit the bacteria, so checking your skin and removing ticks promptly can significantly reduce your risk.

You face the highest risk when an infected blacklegged tick bites you in a region where Lyme disease is common. Tick infection rates vary widely, so a single nationwide percentage cannot accurately describe every bite.

Why Most Tick Species Do Not Spread Lyme Disease

In the United States, blacklegged ticks, including the eastern blacklegged tick (Ixodes scapularis) and western blacklegged tick (Ixodes pacificus), spread Lyme disease. Lone star ticks, American dog ticks, Rocky Mountain wood ticks, and brown dog ticks do not transmit the bacteria that cause Lyme disease, though they can spread other illnesses.

You may not reliably identify a tick’s species by its appearance alone. If you save the tick after removing it, a healthcare professional or local health department may be able to help identify it.

Where Infected Ticks Are Most Common

You will most often find infected blacklegged ticks in wooded areas of the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, and north-central United States. Smaller pockets exist along the Pacific Coast.

Blacklegged ticks in much of the Southeast are almost never infected with Lyme disease bacteria. Your outdoor exposure matters too.

Leaf litter, brush, tall grass, and wooded edges provide common habitat for ticks, especially where wildlife is present.

In the United States, Borrelia burgdorferi causes most Lyme disease infections. Blacklegged ticks acquire the bacteria when larval or nymphal ticks feed on infected wildlife, commonly rodents.

The bacteria can persist as the tick develops into its next life stage. An infected nymph or adult female may then pass the bacteria to you during a later blood meal.

Female ticks do not generally pass Lyme disease bacteria to their offspring. Newly hatched larvae are usually uninfected until they feed on an infected host.

Why Nymphs Are Easy to Miss

Nymphs are active during much of spring and early summer, when you may spend more time outdoors. Their tiny size allows them to remain attached unnoticed.

A full-body check after outdoor activity can help you find nymphs before they have time to transmit infection. Pay close attention to your scalp, hairline, armpits, waist, groin, behind your knees, and around sock lines.

Deer provide blood meals that help adult ticks survive and reproduce. They also carry ticks into new areas, supporting the spread and persistence of tick populations.

Deer do not become infected with Lyme disease bacteria and do not infect ticks. Small mammals, especially rodents, are more important reservoirs for Borrelia burgdorferi.

What Changes the Risk After a Tick Bite

Your risk after a bite depends on the tick’s species, whether it carried bacteria, where the bite occurred, and how long the tick was attached. Prompt removal and medical guidance when appropriate can help you respond safely.

In most cases, an infected blacklegged tick must remain attached for more than 24 hours before transmitting Lyme disease bacteria. Removing it sooner greatly reduces the chance of infection.

Use fine-tipped tweezers to grasp the tick as close to your skin as possible. Pull upward with steady pressure, then clean the bite area and your hands with soap and water or an alcohol-based cleanser.

Why a Tick Bite Does Not Always Cause Infection

Even an infected tick does not guarantee Lyme disease. The tick may not have been attached long enough, may not have transmitted enough bacteria, or may not have been infected in the first place.

A round or expanding rash, fever, chills, headache, fatigue, muscle aches, or joint pain can develop after infection. Lyme disease symptoms may appear days or weeks after the bite, and some people never notice a rash.
