Where Ticks Wait and How They Grab a Ride

Many ticks use a behavior called questing. They climb grass blades or low shrubs, hold on with their back legs, and extend their front legs toward a passing host.

Trail Edges, Gardening, and Hunting Exposure

Walking through brush or tall grass lets ticks transfer directly to your clothing. Gardening can expose your hands, legs, and arms to ticks living in leaf litter or vegetation around shrubs.

Hunting may involve sitting or walking in habitats used by deer and other wildlife. Check your clothing and exposed skin when you leave the area.

How Deer and Wildlife Support Tick Populations

Deer, rodents, birds, and other wildlife provide blood meals that help ticks survive and reproduce. Deer can carry adult ticks across large areas, while smaller animals may host immature ticks and pathogens.

Deer do not give you a tick bite directly. The risk comes from infected ticks that use wildlife as hosts before seeking another animal or person.

Dogs, Cats, Clothing, and Gear as Tick Carriers

Dogs and cats can carry unattached ticks indoors on their fur. Check pets after outdoor time, especially around the ears, collar, toes, belly, and groin.

Ticks can hide in socks, cuffs, backpacks, blankets, and camping equipment. Keep outdoor gear away from beds and upholstered furniture until you inspect it.

Stay Clear of Vegetation and Dress for Exposure

Walk in the center of trails rather than brushing against grass and shrubs. Wear long pants, long sleeves, and closed shoes.

Tuck pants into socks when you expect heavy exposure, and choose light-colored clothing so crawling ticks are easier to spot.

Using DEET and Other Skin Repellents Safely

Apply an EPA-registered repellent containing DEET, picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus, para-menthane-diol, or 2-undecanone according to its label. Apply it only to exposed skin and clothing as directed, and keep products away from your eyes, mouth, cuts, and irritated skin.

The EPA recommends following label directions carefully. Do not use oil of lemon eucalyptus or para-menthane-diol products on children under 3.

Permethrin-Treated Clothing and Gear

Permethrin-treated clothing and gear can repel or kill ticks that contact the fabric. Use factory-treated items or apply a product specifically labeled for clothing and equipment.

Never apply permethrin directly to your skin, and follow the product instructions for drying and reapplication.

Tick Checks, Showering, and Yard Maintenance

Check your entire body after outdoor exposure, including your scalp, hairline, ears, waist, armpits, groin, and behind your knees. Check children, pets, shoes, and gear as well.

Shower soon after coming indoors to help remove unattached ticks. Tumble-dry clothing on high heat when possible, and clear leaf piles, brush, and tall grass from areas beside your home.

After Finding an Attached Tick

Finding a tick does not guarantee that you will develop a tick-borne disease. Your risk depends on the tick species, how long it was attached, where the exposure occurred, and whether the tick carried a pathogen.

Safe Tick Removal and What Not to Do

Use fine-tipped tweezers to grasp the tick as close to your skin as possible. Pull upward with steady, even pressure.

After removal, clean the bite area and your hands with soap and water or an alcohol-based product. If mouthparts remain in the skin and you cannot easily remove them, leave them alone and allow the skin to heal.

Do not twist, crush, burn, smother, or coat the tick with petroleum jelly, nail polish, alcohol, or other substances. The CDC advises removing an attached tick promptly rather than waiting for medical care.

Save a clear photo or the tick in a sealed container if your healthcare professional recommends identification.

Symptoms to Watch for After a Bite

Watch for symptoms during the following days and weeks. Possible signs include:

  • Fever or chills
  • Headache, fatigue, or muscle aches

Other signs are joint pain, a spreading rash including erythema migrans, or illness-specific symptoms such as nausea.

Blacklegged ticks, also called deer ticks, can transmit the bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi, which causes Lyme disease. Lone star ticks are associated with other illnesses and reactions, while Rocky Mountain spotted fever can cause fever, headache, and rash. Symptoms vary, and not every illness causes a rash.

When to Seek Medical Care for Possible Tickborne Disease

Contact a healthcare professional if you develop fever, headache, aches, rash, unusual fatigue, or other concerning symptoms after a tick bite or possible exposure.

Tell the healthcare provider when and where the exposure happened. Let them know where the tick was attached and if you know its species.

Many tickborne diseases cause similar symptoms. Your clinician will consider your symptoms, location, tick type, and testing when choosing treatment.

Seek urgent care if you have a severe headache, confusion, breathing problems, facial weakness, marked weakness, or paralysis.
