Ticks usually get on you by brushing onto your clothing or skin from grass, shrubs, leaf litter, or other vegetation. They do not jump or fall from trees.
A tick may crawl for minutes or hours before it finds a suitable place to attach. You may not notice the encounter.

You can lower your risk by avoiding dense brush, using EPA-registered repellents, wearing protective clothing, and checking your body, children, and pets after outdoor activities. Removing an attached tick promptly also reduces the time some pathogens have to spread.
Questing: The Main Way Ticks Reach Skin
Ticks use a behavior called questing to reach a passing host. They wait on vegetation, detect cues such as body heat, moisture, breath, odors, and movement, then climb onto you when you brush against their perch.

Ticks often rest on the tips of grass, leaves, and low shrubs near paths used by animals and people. They hold onto vegetation with some legs while extending their front legs to grab a passing host.
They conserve energy by waiting in locations where deer, rodents, pets, or people are likely to pass.
Ticks can sense carbon dioxide from your breath, body odors, heat, moisture, vibrations, and movement. These signals help them recognize that a potential host is nearby.
Your activity can bring you into contact with a waiting tick. Walking through vegetation, kneeling in brush, or brushing against a trail edge may give the tick an opportunity to climb aboard.
After reaching your clothing or skin, a tick may crawl until it finds a sheltered feeding site. It often moves toward areas where skin is thinner or protected, such as your waistband, groin, armpits, scalp, behind your knees, or around your ears.
Attachment may not hurt, so ticks can remain unnoticed. Some species produce saliva with anesthetic properties, and ticks can be especially difficult to see in hair or skin folds.
Ticks cannot fly or jump, and they generally do not drop from trees onto people. Most reach you from ground-level vegetation or leaf litter when you contact the place where they are waiting.

Places and Activities That Increase Exposure
You can encounter ticks in more places than remote forests. Trail margins, yards, leaf piles, gardens, and areas visited by deer or pets can all bring you close to questing ticks.

Ticks often gather where vegetation meets a well-used path. Hiking through tall grass, brushing against shrubs, or walking beside wooded areas can put your clothing against their waiting spots.
Leaf litter provides cool, humid cover near the ground. Sitting on leaves, placing a backpack on the forest floor, or stepping off a maintained trail can increase contact with ticks.
A yard can contain ticks when it borders brush, woods, or habitat used by deer and small mammals. Leaf piles, fallen branches, overgrown borders, and tall vegetation create places where ticks and their hosts may persist.
Deer do not need to touch you for exposure to occur. Their presence can indicate an environment where ticks have opportunities to feed and reproduce.
Hiking is a risk, but gardening, yardwork, children’s outdoor play, and handling firewood can also expose you. Kneeling in vegetation or reaching into ground cover brings your hands, legs, and clothing close to ticks.
Pets can carry ticks indoors after walking through grass or woods. Check your dog or cat, especially around the ears, collar, toes, and other protected areas, and inspect clothing and gear before bringing them inside.
Reducing the Chance of a Tick Encounter
A few habits can limit contact before a tick reaches your skin. Combine clothing and gear choices with repellent, fabric treatment, and a careful check after you come indoors.

Wear long sleeves, long pants, and socks that cover exposed skin. Tuck your pant legs into your socks when you expect heavy exposure, and choose light-colored clothing so you can spot crawling ticks more easily.
Stay on cleared paths when practical and avoid brushing against tall grass and shrubs. Keep backpacks or jackets off the ground.
You can also place your clothing and gear in a dryer on high heat after outdoor use, following garment-care instructions.
Apply an EPA-registered repellent according to its label. Products containing DEET, picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus or para-menthane-diol, and 2-undecanone can provide options for exposed skin, depending on the product and user.
Do not apply repellent to irritated skin, and follow age restrictions and directions for children. Keep products away from your eyes and mouth, and wash treated skin when you no longer need protection.
Permethrin-treated clothing and gear can help repel or kill ticks that contact the fabric. You can buy pretreated items or use a product labeled for treating clothing, following every application and drying instruction.
Permethrin is intended for clothing and gear, not bare skin. Never use a fabric treatment product directly on yourself unless its label specifically allows that use.
Check your entire body as soon as possible, including your hairline, ears, armpits, waist, groin, navel, and behind your knees. Check children carefully because ticks can hide in the scalp, clothing edges, and skin folds.
Showering after outdoor time can help you find crawling ticks before they attach. Inspect pets and gear too, then remove any tick promptly with fine-tipped tweezers.
What to Watch for After a Bite
Most tick bites do not cause illness, yet some ticks carry bacteria, viruses, or parasites that cause tick-borne diseases. Your location, the tick species, attachment time, and symptoms all help a healthcare professional assess risk.

Use clean, fine-tipped tweezers to grasp the tick as close to your skin as possible. Pull upward with steady, even pressure, then clean the bite site and your hands with soap and water or alcohol.
Do not twist, crush, burn, or cover the tick with petroleum jelly or other substances. If mouthparts remain and you cannot remove them easily, clean the area and ask a healthcare professional for advice.
Save a photo of the tick or note its appearance, the date, and where exposure occurred.
Watch for fever, chills, fatigue, headache, muscle aches, joint pain, or a rash during the weeks after a tick bite. Lyme disease may cause an expanding rash called erythema migrans, while Southern tick-associated rash illness, also called STARI, can produce a similar rash.
A deer tick may transmit Lyme disease in areas where the infection occurs. Rocky Mountain spotted fever and other tickborne diseases can also cause fever, rash, and aches, and symptoms may overlap.

Contact a healthcare professional if you develop symptoms after a tick bite, especially fever, a spreading rash, severe headache, marked weakness, or worsening muscle or joint pain.
Tell your healthcare provider when and where the bite occurred. Let them know how long the tick may have been attached and whether you can identify the tick.
Seek urgent medical care for trouble breathing, severe weakness, confusion, facial weakness, or paralysis.
Early evaluation allows your clinician to decide whether you need testing, monitoring, or treatment.
