Lyme disease starts with a wildlife-to-tick cycle. Ticks do not hatch carrying Borrelia burgdorferi, the primary Lyme bacterium in the United States.

Ticks usually pick up the bacteria while feeding on an infected small mammal. They may then pass the bacteria to you during a later tick bite.

How Ticks Pick Up Lyme Bacteria

Blacklegged ticks move through a two-to-three-year life cycle. They take blood meals at several stages.

Ticks can acquire Borrelia from infected wildlife and carry it into a later stage when they seek another host.

Wildlife Reservoirs and White-Footed Mice

In the United States, white-footed mice and other small rodents serve as important wildlife reservoirs for Borrelia burgdorferi. When a larval or nymphal tick feeds on an infected animal, the bacteria can enter the tick’s gut and remain through its next developmental stage.

The tick may later transmit the bacteria during another blood meal.

Why Deer Support Ticks but Do Not Infect Them

Deer provide substantial blood meals for adult ticks and help maintain tick populations. Their movements carry ticks into new areas of suitable tick habitat.

Deer do not act as reservoirs for Lyme bacteria, so ticks feeding on deer usually do not become infected.

The Tick Life Cycle From Larva to Adult

Blacklegged ticks progress from egg to larva, nymph, and adult. Larvae usually begin uninfected because female ticks do not generally pass Lyme bacteria to their offspring.

After feeding on an infected rodent, a larva can molt into an infected nymph. An infected nymph or adult female can then spread Borrelia during a later feeding period, including on a person.

Which Ticks Can Spread Lyme to People

In the United States, two species of Ixodes mainly transmit Lyme disease: Ixodes scapularis in the East and Midwest, and Ixodes pacificus along parts of the Pacific Coast.

Risk depends on local tick infection rates, habitat, and the tick’s life stage.

Eastern and Midwestern Blacklegged Ticks

Ixodes scapularis, the blacklegged tick or deer tick, lives in wooded areas, leaf litter, brush, and grassy edges across the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, and north-central United States.

Nymphal ticks are important for human infection because they are tiny and active when people spend more time outdoors. Adult ticks can also transmit Lyme disease and are easier to spot because they are larger.

Western Blacklegged Ticks on the Pacific Coast

The western blacklegged tick, Ixodes pacificus, transmits Borrelia burgdorferi in smaller, localized areas along the Pacific Coast. You may find it in woodland environments, brush, leaf litter, and vegetation bordering trails.

Not every blacklegged tick carries Lyme bacteria. Local infection rates vary by geography and life stage.

Why Small Nymphs Create the Greatest Risk

Nymphal ticks can be about the size of a poppy seed, making them difficult to notice on skin or clothing. They are active during much of the warmer season and can attach before you realize you have entered tick habitat.

Adult ticks are closer to the size of a sesame seed and may be easier to detect during a body check.

An infected tick needs time to feed before transmitting Lyme bacteria. Your risk rises with prolonged attachment, so quick inspection and careful tick removal help lower risk after outdoor activities.

Attachment Time and Prompt Tick Removal

According to the CDC’s Lyme disease guidance, an infected tick usually must remain attached for more than 24 hours to transmit infection. Removing it promptly greatly reduces your chance of developing Lyme disease, though no exact time guarantees zero risk.

Use fine-tipped tweezers to grasp the tick close to your skin and pull upward with steady pressure. Clean the bite area and your hands, then note the date and location of the exposure.

What Lyme Does and Does Not Spread Through

Lyme disease spreads primarily through the bite of an infected blacklegged tick. It does not spread through touching, kissing, sexual contact, air, food, water, or ordinary contact with an infected person or pet.

The CDC reports no confirmed cases linked to blood transfusion, although Borrelia can survive in stored blood. Dogs and cats can bring infected ticks indoors, so protecting pets also helps reduce household tick exposure.

Possible Tick-Borne Co-Infections

A single tick bite can expose you to more than one tick-borne disease, depending on the pathogens carried by local ticks. Co-infections may include babesiosis, caused by Babesia, or anaplasmosis, caused by Anaplasma bacteria.

Tell your clinician about the bite, travel location, timing, and symptoms. Testing and treatment decisions may need to account for Lyme disease and possible tick-borne co-infections.

Reducing Risk After Time Outdoors

You can lower risk by combining protective clothing, repellents, tick checks, and prompt removal. Pay attention to symptoms after a bite, since early diagnosis and antibiotic treatment can prevent more serious illness.

Checking for Ticks and Removing One Safely

After hiking, gardening, camping, or playing near wooded areas, check your clothing, gear, pets, and entire body. Pay close attention to the scalp, hairline, armpits, groin, waist, and behind the knees.

If you find a tick, remove it with fine-tipped tweezers. Pull straight upward without twisting, crushing, burning, or coating it with petroleum jelly.

Wash the area and record when the bite occurred.

Repellents and Treated Clothing

Use an EPA-registered repellent according to its label. Options include DEET, picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus, and para-menthane-diol.

Do not use oil of lemon eucalyptus or para-menthane-diol products on children younger than three years.

For clothing and gear, permethrin-treated clothing can help repel or kill ticks. Wear long pants and closed shoes, tuck pants into socks when practical, and stay on cleared trails instead of brushing against tall grass and dense vegetation.

Symptoms That Need Prompt Medical Advice

Watch for an expanding rash, especially one resembling erythema migrans. Fever, headache, fatigue, swollen lymph nodes, or joint pain can also occur.

A rash does not always form. You should contact a clinician if you develop possible Lyme disease symptoms after tick exposure.

Early localized disease can progress to early disseminated Lyme disease, which affects more areas of the body. If you do not receive treatment, late disseminated disease may involve neurological problems, Lyme carditis, heart block, Lyme arthritis, or persistent joint inflammation.
