In 1980, Mario Hünicken described Megarachne servinei as a huge spider, and that idea spread fast. The fossil became famous as the “giant spider” that inspired books and documentaries, even though the original holotype specimen was not a true spider.

The 2005 Reclassification

In 2005, Paul Selden and José Corronca reexamined the fossil and identified Megarachne as a sea scorpion, not a giant spider. It belonged with the eurypterid group, more closely tied to aquatic predators than to land-dwelling spiders.

Anatomical Clues

The details told the story. Features like lunules and mucrones fit a mycteroptid eurypterid far better than a spider.

What The Spider Fossil Record Tells Us

The real fossil record shows ancient spiders that were successful, varied, and sometimes large. It does not show a simple line of ever-growing “mega-spiders.”

Early True Spiders

The oldest widely accepted true spiders date back to the Carboniferous. Many early forms likely belonged to Mesothelae.

These spiders were probably ground hunters in coal forest habitats. Silk may have first helped with egg protection and simple retreats.

Ancient Spiders Compared With Living Species

Some ancient spiders were sizable. The largest known fossil spider is often discussed alongside Mongolarachne jurassica, which was large for a spider but still not movie-monster size.

Compared with the largest spider ever once claimed from Megarachne, the real fossil story is more modest and more interesting.

Spider fossils are rare because soft bodies do not preserve well.
