Pets can carry ticks into your home. You can kill individual ticks and reduce tick populations near people, but eliminating every tick across the United States is not currently realistic or ecologically safe.

Removing an Attached Tick Safely
Use fine-tipped tweezers to grasp the attached tick as close to your skin as possible. Pull upward with steady, even pressure until it releases.
Avoid twisting, squeezing the body, burning it, or applying petroleum jelly, nail polish, or other substances. After removal, clean the bite and your hands with soap and water or rubbing alcohol.

Disposing of a Crawling or Removed Tick
Place a crawling tick in rubbing alcohol, seal it in tape, or put it in a small sealed container. You can also flush it down the toilet.

Do not rely on home testing alone to decide whether you need care.
When a Tick Bite Needs Medical Attention

You can lower risk without trying to sterilize nature. Combine repellents, clothing, routine checks, prompt laundry, pet prevention, landscape changes, and carefully targeted professional treatment.

Repellents and Treated Clothing for Outdoor Time
Apply an EPA-registered repellent according to its label. Common options include DEET, picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus, and para-menthane-3,8-diol.
Do not use oil of lemon eucalyptus or para-menthane-3,8-diol on children younger than three. Permethrin-treated clothing can protect you during hikes, yard work, and camping.
Keep permethrin products off your skin unless the label specifically allows that use. Follow instructions for application, drying, and re-treatment.
Stay on cleared paths and avoid brushing against tall grass and dense vegetation. Wear light-colored clothing so crawling ticks are easier to spot.
Tick Checks, Laundry, and Pet Protection
Check your body after outdoor activity, especially your scalp, hairline, waist, groin, armpits, behind your knees, and around your ears. Inspect children and pets, including collars, toes, and other sheltered areas.
Put worn clothing in a dryer on high heat before washing when the fabric allows it. If you wash first, use hot water when appropriate, because cold or warm water may not kill every tick.

Create a dry gravel or wood-chip border between lawns and wooded edges. Move playground equipment, seating, and pet resting areas away from dense vegetation.
