Can you imagine Norse sailors catching sight of a white bear drifting along the ice? I always wonder what went through their minds—and what they called it. Vikings called polar bears hvítabjörn (Old Norse for “white bear”), which just ties the animal’s color straight to its name. That simple word says a lot about how…
You might assume polar bears have lousy hearing just because their ears look tiny on such a massive head. But actually, their hearing’s just fine—in fact, in air, they hear at least as well as we do and can even pick up some sounds that are out of our range. That little edge helps them…
Most people probably never expect to find themselves staring down a polar bear, but if it happens, you’ll need to react fast and decisively. If a polar bear gets close enough to touch you, fight back with everything you’ve got—go for its face and nose, use bear spray if it’s handy, and whatever you do,…
So, you want a quick answer? Honestly, it depends. Polar bears can be more dangerous if they see you as food, while grizzly bears tend to act aggressively when protecting territory or cubs. If a polar bear gets hungry, it might see you as prey and attack. Grizzlies, on the other hand, are quick to…
You might love the idea of a gentle polar bear, but honestly, you should know the truth before even thinking about getting close. Polar bears are wild predators, and yeah, they’re definitely not reliably friendly to people—they can be downright dangerous. That’s true whether you spot one in the wild, at a research camp, or…
People sometimes toss around “black bear” and “polar bear” like they’re the same creature, but that’s not the case. Let’s dig into how polar bears and black bears differ—think size, fur, diet, and their homes. You might’ve…
You want a straight answer, right? Well, honestly, it depends on which bear you’re talking about and where the fight happens. A big coastal brown bear (like a Kodiak) usually beats a polar bear if they’re fighting on solid ground. But if they’re on ice or in water, the polar bear’s got the upper hand….
Maybe you’ve heard someone say polar bears are deaf. It sounds believable, especially since cubs are born both blind and deaf. But here’s the thing—adult polar bears aren’t deaf at all. Adult polar bears have working hearing that helps them hunt and stay safe, especially when sights and smells fail. Let’s get into how their…
You can actually spot polar bears at just a handful of places in the UK. That’s important, whether you’re planning a visit or just curious about how these animals live here. Right now, the UK has twelve polar bears: eight at Yorkshire Wildlife Park and four at Highland Wildlife Park. I’ll show you where they…
You might picture polar bears as creatures of endless cold and snow. But honestly, when the air heats up, the sun’s out, and they’re on the move, their thick fur and blubber can turn into a bit of a problem. Polar bears start to feel heat stress at temperatures that would seem cool for us—usually…
