If you have ever found a tiny, crawling speck attached to your skin or your pet, you may have wondered, are ticks parasites? Yes. Ticks are blood-feeding external parasites, meaning they live on the outside of a host and rely on that host for nourishment.

They are also arachnids, related to spiders and mites rather than insects.

Ticks usually do not cause illness simply by attaching. However, a tick bite can transmit bacteria, viruses, or other parasites that lead to serious disease.

Knowing how ticks feed, where they live, and what to do after exposure helps you reduce your risk.

What Makes Ticks External Parasites

Ticks belong to the order Ixodida and include families such as Ixodidae and Argasidae.

As external parasites, ticks attach to people, dogs, deer, and other animals, then take a blood meal before dropping off.

How Ticks Feed on Hosts

A tick detects body heat, moisture, odors, breath, and vibrations.

It waits on vegetation in a behavior called questing, holding out its front legs until a passing host brushes against it.

After reaching a host, the tick searches for a suitable feeding site.

It cuts the skin, inserts its feeding tube, and may release anesthetic saliva and a cement-like substance that helps it stay attached.

Depending on the species and life stage, feeding can last from minutes to several days.

Hard Ticks and Soft Ticks

Hard ticks belong mainly to Ixodidae and have a firm plate called a scutum.

The scutum is especially noticeable on the adult male and covers much of the female’s back.

Hard ticks often remain attached for an extended meal.

Soft ticks, in the family Argasidae, have flexible, leathery bodies without the prominent scutum.

They tend to feed more quickly and may live in animal shelters, caves, nests, or rustic buildings.

The Tick Life Cycle

A tick typically develops through four stages: egg, larva, nymph, and adult tick.

Larvae have six legs, while nymphs and adults have eight, like other arachnids.

Each active stage generally needs a blood meal to grow or reproduce.

A tick species may use different hosts at different stages.

Nymphs can be especially difficult to spot because they are very small.

Why Tick Bites Can Cause Health Problems

A tick bite may cause only local irritation, yet some ticks carry organisms that produce tick-borne diseases.

In the United States, those organisms include bacteria, viruses, and parasites, and several illnesses can begin with similar symptoms.

How Pathogens Move During Feeding

If a tick feeds on an infected animal, it may acquire a pathogen with the blood.

During a later meal, saliva can carry that organism into another host.

Transmission depends on the tick species, pathogen, and feeding conditions.

A tick’s saliva may make the bite painless, so checking your skin soon after outdoor exposure matters.

Common Tickborne Diseases in the United States

Recognized tick-borne illnesses include:

  • Lyme disease, caused by bacteria such as Borrelia burgdorferi
  • Rocky Mountain spotted fever, or RMSF
  • Ehrlichiosis and anaplasmosis
  • Babesiosis
  • Tularemia, associated with Francisella bacteria
  • Colorado tick fever
  • Tick-borne relapsing fever
  • Heartland virus and Powassan virus
  • Southern tick-associated rash illness, or STARI

According to the CDC’s information on ticks and tickborne disease, fever, chills, headache, fatigue, muscle aches, joint pain, and rash are common warning signs across several infections.

Symptoms That Need Medical Attention

Contact a healthcare professional if you develop fever, chills, a new rash, unusual fatigue, headache, muscle aches, or joint pain within several weeks of a tick bite.

An expanding rash, severe headache, confusion, breathing difficulty, facial weakness, or rapidly worsening illness deserves prompt medical attention.

Tell your clinician when and where the exposure occurred.

Geographic region, likely tick species, symptoms, and appropriate laboratory testing can all affect evaluation and treatment.

Tick Paralysis and Alpha-Gal Syndrome

A toxin in the saliva of an attached tick can cause tick paralysis.

Weakness or paralysis may gradually move upward through the body and requires urgent medical care.

Some bites, particularly from lone star ticks, can trigger alpha-gal syndrome, also called alpha-gal allergy or red meat allergy.

This immune reaction can cause delayed allergic symptoms after eating mammalian meat or products containing alpha-gal.

Seek medical advice for hives, swelling, breathing trouble, or other allergic reactions.

Avoiding Bites and Responding After Exposure

You can lower your risk by avoiding dense tick habitat, using appropriate repellents, checking your body and clothing, and removing attached ticks quickly.

Prevention matters in every season because tick activity varies by region and weather.

Where Ticks Wait for Hosts

Ticks commonly live in grassy, brushy, or wooded areas, especially where leaf litter and animal trails provide cover.

During questing, they climb onto grass or low shrubs and wait for a person or animal to brush past.

They cannot fly or jump.

The CDC’s tick-bite prevention guidance recommends walking in the center of trails and limiting contact with tall grass, brush, and leaf litter.

Common U.S. Ticks and Their Ranges

The American dog tick occurs widely, especially in grassy areas and along trails.

The lone star tick is common across much of the Southeast and parts of the Midwest and Northeast.

The deer tick, also called the black-legged tick, is established in the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, Midwest, and parts of the Pacific Coast.

The Rocky Mountain wood tick occurs in mountainous regions of the West.

Ranges can shift with animal movement, land use, and climate change.

Safe Removal and Symptom Monitoring

Use fine-tipped tweezers to grasp the tick as close to your skin as possible.

Pull upward with steady pressure, then clean the bite area and your hands with soap and water or an alcohol-based cleanser.

Avoid twisting, crushing, burning, or covering the tick with petroleum jelly.

Record the date and location of the bite, and monitor for fever, rash, chills, headache, fatigue, muscle aches, or other unusual symptoms during the following weeks.

Personal and Yard Prevention

Wear long sleeves, long pants, and light-colored clothing when practical. Tuck pants into socks and apply an EPA-registered repellent as directed.

Treat suitable clothing or gear with permethrin according to the product label. After outdoor activities, inspect your skin, scalp, clothing, gear, and pets.

Shower soon after coming indoors to help remove unattached ticks. Keep grass trimmed and clear leaf litter.

Create a barrier between lawns and wooded areas to make your yard less inviting.
