Ticks may show some preference for certain blood types. Your blood type is not a proven predictor of tick bites.

A small laboratory study found that Ixodes ricinus ticks were most attracted to type A blood, followed by type O and AB, while type B was least preferred. Researchers have not confirmed this finding in real-world settings.

Your location, time outdoors, clothing, exposed skin, and prevention habits matter much more than your ABO blood group. Ticks detect heat, carbon dioxide, humidity, and chemical cues from potential hosts.

You should use protective measures regardless of your blood type.

What the Research Actually Shows

A pilot experiment offers a possible clue about tick attraction but does not provide a personal risk calculator. The results involved a European tick species and controlled blood samples, not people moving through American forests, yards, or trails.

The Type A Finding in Ixodes ricinus

Researchers placed samples representing the ABO blood group on filter paper in a Petri dish and observed 100 nymphal Ixodes ricinus ticks. Type A blood attracted the most tick activity, followed by type O and AB, while type B attracted the least.

The study suggests that blood type A might influence tick behavior under those specific conditions. It does not show that every tick prefers type A or that people with type A blood will necessarily receive more bites.

Why One Laboratory Study Cannot Predict Outdoor Bite Risk

A laboratory setup removes many cues that shape encounters between ticks and human hosts. Outdoors, ticks respond to vegetation, moisture, temperature, movement, body heat, carbon dioxide, clothing, and the length of your exposure.

The experiment used I. ricinus, which is common in Europe. Tick species and exposure patterns differ across the United States, so you should not treat the finding as a direct measure of your personal risk.

What the Study Does Not Establish

The study does not establish that blood type determines tick bites, transmission of Lyme disease, or the severity of tick-borne illness. It also does not prove that type B blood protects you.

Researchers called for additional in vivo research. The results have not been replicated in real-world human exposure.

How Ticks Find a Host

Ticks use several signals at once rather than relying on blood type alone. Their sensory systems help them detect nearby hosts through air chemistry, temperature, moisture, movement, and odors.

Haller’s Organ and Chemical Cues

A tick’s Haller’s organ, located on its front legs, detects environmental signals. These organs help identify carbon dioxide, odors, humidity, heat, and other signs of a nearby animal.

When a tick waits on vegetation, these cues can trigger host-seeking behavior. Blood type may affect feeding preference after contact, but it is only one possible influence among many.

Body Heat, Carbon Dioxide, and Humidity

Your breathing releases carbon dioxide, while your body produces heat and moisture. Those signals can help ticks locate you at close range, especially when you pass through vegetation where ticks wait.

Warm, humid conditions may also increase tick activity. Your risk rises when you spend more time in brush, leaf litter, tall grass, or wooded areas where host-seeking ticks are present.

Sweat, Lactic Acid, and Ammonia

Sweat contains chemicals such as lactic acid and ammonia that may contribute to the odor profile ticks detect. Movement can disturb vegetation and bring you into contact with a waiting tick.

These signals do not mean you can prevent tick bites by changing your diet, bathing routine, or blood group. Repellents, clothing, and prompt tick checks provide more practical protection against parasites.

Reducing Bite and Disease Risk Regardless of Blood Group

You cannot change your blood type, and you do not need to know whether ticks show a preference before taking precautions. Protective clothing, repellents, and quick removal reduce exposure to tick-borne diseases.

Protective Clothing and Repellents

Wear long pants, long sleeves, and closed shoes when you enter brush, tall grass, or wooded areas. Tuck your pants into your socks when practical, and choose light-colored clothing so you can spot crawling ticks more easily.

Apply an EPA-registered repellent according to its label. Stay on cleared trails and avoid contact with brush to reduce the chance of a tick reaching your skin.

DEET and Permethrin Use

Apply DEET to exposed skin as directed on the product label. Do not apply it to cuts, irritated skin, or clothing unless the label specifically permits that use.

Permethrin-treated clothing and gear can repel or kill ticks. Do not apply permethrin products intended for clothing directly to your skin, and follow all laundering and reapplication instructions.

Tick Checks and Prompt Removal

After outdoor activity, check your clothing, gear, pets, and entire body. Pay close attention to the scalp, hairline, ears, armpits, waist, groin, backs of the knees, and between the toes.

Remove an attached tick promptly with fine-tipped tweezers. Grasp it close to the skin, pull upward steadily, then clean the bite area and your hands. Prompt removal can reduce the chance of infection because some pathogens require time to transmit.

When to Seek Care After a Tick Bite

Watch for an expanding rash, fever, chills, headache, fatigue, muscle aches, joint pain, or other unusual symptoms after a tick bite or outdoor exposure.

The bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi causes Lyme disease. Lyme disease is one of several tick-borne illnesses in the United States.

Contact a healthcare professional if you develop symptoms, cannot remove the tick completely, or feel concerned about the tick’s appearance, how long it was attached, or local disease risk.

Tell the clinician when and where the exposure happened. Do not rely on blood type to estimate your need for evaluation.
